Mariah Carey: “Always Be My Baby” (1995)

From the moment “Always Be My Baby” begins, it’s immersed in nostalgia. What sounds initially like an acoustic guitar has the artificial shimmer of a romanticized memory, while Carey’s wordless chorus feels Motown-esque, buoyant in the face of what should be heartache. But “Always Be My Baby” is not a breakup song. It’s a song about eternity. Just because something is over doesn’t mean it’s?over; every touch is in some way permanent, and anyone who passes through your heart leaves their shape behind.
