Capriccio2 - A letter to my alumni who
Remember, there is no reason why you should stick with your PhD topic, a PhD is 90% to learn how to work and think, 10% about becoming an expert on a topic (in my opinion). A career in academia is long, takes a lot of time and does not always bring a lot of satisfaction. In fact, in terms of work-life balance (and money) it is a pretty bad choice and I am currently not recommending it unless someone is extremely passionate about science and willing to sacrificie almost any other aspect in life. I can tell you that, if I went back in time, I myself would probably take a different path and try to work for a tech company…but it is too late for me now - and at the end I am one of those who actually made it to the end, it was just bloody hard! So, getting back to you, A (or anything similar to A sounds to me by far the best option. B possibly the worst. You don’t want to tie your future to being able to publish 4 SCI papers within a certain timeframe, think about how long it took you to publish those 3 papers…life does not have to be that hard. And a job outside academia will also allow you to explore other avenues and meet different people. If you get A - or C, where requirements are lower at least - I think it is better.
