呼吸道合胞病毒最早于1955年由美國(guó)沃爾特·里德陸軍研究所在患有呼吸道疾病的黑猩猩體內(nèi)發(fā)現(xiàn)，1957年Chanock和Finberg從兒童體內(nèi)分離出，由于其特殊的細(xì)胞融合性病變，所以命名為人呼吸道合胞病毒（human respiratory syncytial virus，HRSV）。據(jù)報(bào)道，HRSV是世界范圍內(nèi)嬰幼兒下呼吸道感染最重要的病原體之一，有些地區(qū)2歲以內(nèi)的兒童至少發(fā)生過一次感染。近年來，研究發(fā)現(xiàn)HRSV也可引起成年人、老年人以及免疫抑制患者下呼吸道感染。2015年全球范圍內(nèi)由HRSV引起的呼吸道感染人數(shù)約3.31億，導(dǎo)致約320萬5歲以下兒童住院治療，其中約6萬名住院死亡，而老年人住院約33.6萬，住院死亡約為1.4萬，醫(yī)院和社區(qū)每年因HRSV死亡人數(shù)約為10萬～15萬。HRSV占全球兒童急性下呼吸道感染的22%，中國(guó)HRSV感染率約為31/1000，占兒童急性下呼吸道感染的18.7%。HRSV觸發(fā)宿主炎癥免疫反應(yīng)，雖然人體對(duì)HRSV免疫反應(yīng)尚不完全，但會(huì)引起疾病進(jìn)一步發(fā)展，且HRSV致病機(jī)制也尚不完善。HRSV臨床尚無有效疫苗，開發(fā)有效疫苗和單克隆抗體，即是機(jī)遇，也是挑戰(zhàn)。隨著呼吸道合胞病毒多種基因型相繼出現(xiàn)，并呈現(xiàn)交替流行以及共流行的現(xiàn)象，基因型的不斷變異、變遷，所造成的疾病程度也有所不同。
