We know what you’re thinking: that’s one strangely colourful lake. It may surprise you to discover, however, that while today’s image possesses a striking resemblance to the many salt lakes scattered across the country, you’re actually looking at a tailing pond found deep within Western Australia. These ponds are usually created from ore mils that are known for generating ‘tailings’, which are then placed in existing valleys and secured by dams. While tailing ponds do possess a degree of environmental risk, the Government of Western Australia has worked hard to rehabilitate and monitor ponds to ensure the safety of natural flora and fauna.
